Expert Profile
Dr. Erna Normaya Abdullah is an Associate Professor at International Islamic University Malaysia. She received her Ph.D. in Chemistry from Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) in 2015. Her primary research interest is to help the community by developing a cost-effective, movable, and easy-to-handle eco-friendly sensor for detecting toxic elements in environmental water, which requires no special training. This research follows the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) of providing clean water and sanitation for the community. Chemosensors are being developed to detect hazardous metal ions at an early stage and water resources may be monitored effectively. Besides involves in chemosensor research, she also conducts research for the oil and gas industry that related to solve corrosion problems by using organic inhibitors, which is more environmentally friendly. She also uses computational chemistry software such as Gaussion09, GaussView05, Autodock Vina, and Materials Studio to visualize, analyze, and explain invisible phenomena that occur in chemistry-related research. By combining experimental and theoretical approaches, her research outcomes (WOS-articles) were successfully published in several reputable publishers such as Elsevier, Springer-Nature, Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC), American Chemical Society (ACS), Springer, and Wiley. Due to her research interests/expertise in computational chemistry, synthetic and analytical chemistry, as well as drug and food inhibitors, she has served as a manuscript reviewer for several international and reputable publishers, such as Elsevier, Springer, and Emerald. She is also one of the Institut Kimia Malaysia (IKM) members. According to the Laws of Malaysia, Act 158, Chemist Act 1975, she qualified to produce official chemical analyses for industry and the community without approval from government agencies.
