Dr. Nor Zainiyah Norita Mokhtar

Dr. Nor Zainiyah Norita Mokhtar is a distinguished Malaysian academic with 28 years of experience in education, including 25 years of service at the International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM). She holds a PhD in Linguistics from the University of Sheffield, United Kingdom, specializing in Pragmatics, Semantics, and Intercultural Communication. Her academic interests also include language pedagogy and early literacy development. Dr. Nor Zainiyah has held notable international academic appointments, including as a Visiting Professor at the University of Brawijaya, Indonesia, where she taught TPACK (Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge) in language education. In 2023, she was appointed Adjunct Professor at Shenandoah University, Virginia, USA, where she taught Intercultural Communication and facilitated a First-Year Seminar titled “You’re a Creative Genius” under the Department of Mass Communication. Since 2021, she has been a leading figure in Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL), beginning with her fellowship under the Barzinji Project at Shenandoah University. To date, she has successfully led 14 COIL projects and hosted Assoc. Prof. Dr. Kelley Crowley and Prof. Abigail Gomez for a Barzinji-funded mobility programme at IIUM. Dr. Nor Zainiyah has been invited as:


  • Plenary Speaker at the BIMP-EAGA International Research Conference and Training 2025 in Palawan,


  • Resource Speaker for COIL 101, 2025 at Bukidnon State University,


  • Invited Speaker for ASEAN Fridays 2025 at Marinduque State University,


  • As well as a speaker at the Barzinji Conference (2023), HKBU Global Summits (2024 & 2025), and the 3rd COIL Conference (2025) in Davao City.


She actively supports Marinduque State University and Bukidnon State University in COIL integration and is formalizing joint research with San Pedro College. A trained UNESCO Story Circle facilitator, Dr. Nor Zainiyah, champions globally connected, intercultural, and inclusive education.
