Expert Profile
Professor Ts. Dr. Rose Alinda Alias is an accomplished scholar in information systems and a visionary leader in higher education. She earned her PhD in Information Systems from the University of Salford (1998), and earlier completed concurrent MSc and MBA (1986) and a BSc (1985) at the University of Miami. Over a 35‑year career she has mentored scores of students – 24 PhD candidates to date – and built a research portfolio (in knowledge management, digital transformation, AI applications) that has attracted thousands of citations. Her breadth of expertise and passion for technology-driven innovation make her a dynamic addition to IIUM’s ICT faculty.
Career Highlights
- Academic Leadership: Served as Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic & International) at Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (2012–2016), steering strategic planning and quality assurance. She chaired Malaysia’s national council of deputy-vice-chancellors (JKTNCRA) and as Dean of UTM’s Graduate School (2007–2011) she led Malaysia’s Graduate Studies Deans Council (MyDEGS). Under her leadership UTM expanded its graduate programs dramatically and climbed in global rankings.
- Curriculum Innovation: Chaired a Ministry of Higher Education task force on academic transformation for the Fourth Industrial Revolution, developing the “Future-Ready Curriculum 4.0” framework. She pioneered new industry-immersive learning models (e.g. treating workplaces as “learning labs”) and data-driven student analytics to improve outcomes.
- AI and Policy: Led a MOSTI-funded multidisciplinary team to formulate Malaysia’s National AI Roadmap (2021–2025), crafting strategies for responsible AI adoption nationwide. She now advises national agencies as a member of Malaysia’s Blockchain & AI Council, guiding ethical AI and blockchain integration into policy.
- Professional Service: Founded and led the Malaysian Chapter of the Association for Information Systems (MyAIS), building a vibrant community of IS researchers. She co-chaired the prestigious PACIS conference in Malaysia (Langkawi 2017) and is Conference Co-Chair for PACIS 2025 in Kuala Lumpur – roles that underscore her standing in the Asia‐Pacific IS community. She also served on AIS’s global Diversity & Inclusion committee, reflecting her commitment to inclusive and ethical technology practice.
- Scholarship & Mentoring: An active researcher in information systems management and emerging technologies, Prof. Rose has authored numerous high-impact publications. She has successfully supervised 24 doctoral dissertations and dozens of master’s projects, instilling in her students a blend of technical rigour and ethical responsibility.
Research Excellence & Vision
Professor Rose’s work sits at the nexus of technology, organisational strategy, and social impact. Her research in knowledge management, business intelligence, and digital platforms is marked by a systems perspective and a focus on quality and trust in technology. For example, she has explored how AI can transform higher-education services (such as adaptive library systems) and how data analytics can close learning gaps in university settings. This scholarship informs her advocacy for ethical AI: ensuring that innovations like machine learning and smart systems are transparent, fair, and aligned with societal values. Industry experts note that she consistently emphasises “technology and trust”, championing data-driven decision-making while safeguarding student and user wellbeing. On the global stage, Prof. Rose is recognised for thought leadership in IT education and innovation. Her repeated leadership of PACIS conferences, and her role in international AIS initiatives, have helped bridge Malaysia’s academic community with worldwide trends. She also spearheaded initiatives like UTMLead, a centre to cultivate leadership skills among academics. These efforts showcase her inspirational and visionary style to achieve bold goals (such as a 900% increase in international graduate enrollment during her deanship) by marshalling collaborative teams to achieve them. In developing Malaysia's tertiary education landscape in the 21st century, she rallied universities to view their third year as a laboratory (“industry as the learning lab”), aligning curriculum with emerging digital economies.
AI Ethics & Leadership Impact
In her new role at IIUM, Professor Rose will further elevate the university’s expertise in AI ethics and academic leadership. She brings decades of experience forging partnerships (for example, UTM’s collaborations with MIT and global universities) and guiding institutions through disruptive change. Her record of national service – from the AI Roadmap to science-and-innovation white papers – signals a commitment to responsible technology: ensuring that artificial intelligence is deployed fairly, inclusively, and under sound regulatory frameworks. Moreover, her active engagement on boards (such as the Yayasan Tenaga Nasional's Board of Trustees) and councils reflects a strategic mindset: aligning organisational governance, financial stewardship, and educational mission in tandem. Leading the establishment of IIUM's Centre for Accountability, Responsibility, and Ethics in Artificial Intelligence (CARE - AI), she will champion IIUM’s growth in areas like ethical AI policy, smart campus initiatives, and leadership development, all while mentoring a new generation of scholars and managers. Prof. Rose Alinda Alias exemplifies the scholarly leadership IIUM possesses: a seasoned expert whose deep technical knowledge is matched by a bold, people-centered vision for the future.
