Expert Profile
Mohammad Ariff Rashidan is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Mechatronics, Kulliyyah of Engineering, International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM), where he has been since 2025. Previously, he served as a Matriculation Lecturer at IIUM Academy in 2024. Before joining academia, he gained industrial experience as a System Engineer at Diamond Key International Sdn. Bhd. (2014-2015) and as an Intellectual Property Executive (Mechanical/Electrical) at SIRIM Berhad (2017-2018). During his tenure at SIRIM, he also held the role of Internal Auditor for the Integrated Management System (ISO 9001:2015, ISO 14000:2015, and OHSAS 18001:2007).
Dr. Ariff received his Bachelor of Engineering (Mechatronics) (Hons.) from International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) in 2013 and Master of Science in Mechatronics Engineering from the same institution in 2016. He has been conferred a Doctorate in Engineering (Mechatronics) by IIUM in 2024.
Dr. Ariff’s research focuses on autonomous mechatronic systems and intelligent systems. His work in autonomous mechatronic systems focuses on robotic development, robotic sensing, surveillance systems, and navigation. Meanwhile, his research in intelligent systems involves applying machine learning in biomechatronics, particularly in understanding human emotion complexity, physiological processes, and developing practical and economical solutions through mechatronics engineering principles. His ongoing research projects include affective computing, thermal imaging analysis, and high-definition electromyography.
Dr. Ariff has published more than 25 articles in books, refereed journal, and various international and national conferences as editors, authors and co-authors some of which have been highly cited. He also holds several intellectual properties including patents, copyrights, and industrial designs, focused on emotion studies and assistive technologies for autism. He has actively contributed to consultancy projects, particularly in Intellectual Property (IP), with a focus on patents advisory. His industry collaborations include partnerships with IDEAS Autism Centre, The National Autism Society of Malaysia (NASOM), and Polis Diraja Malaysia (PDRM).
As an educator, he has taught various Mechatronics engineering subjects and supervised undergraduate and postgraduate research project on autonomous mechatronic systems and intelligent systems. He is also a professional member of Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), and the Board of Engineers Malaysia (BEM).
In addition, Dr. Ariff holds several professional certifications that complement his expertise in engineering and technology. He is NVIDIA Professional Certified in Deep Learning for Intelligent Video Analytics and Computer Vision, a Certified Android Application Developer, and has completed LabVIEW courses. His technical qualifications extend to AUTOCAD as a Certified Associate, along with proficiency in Red Hat Enterprise Linux System. Beyond his engineering competencies, he has obtained the Oil & Gas Safety Passport from National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) and is Essential First Aid Certified by St. John Ambulance of Malaysia, highlighting his commitment to safety and technical excellence.
