Expert Profile
As a sociologist of education, my research interests include the relationship between individuals from different social class and educational institutions, and how these relationships are shaped by the intersecting state policies, class (or the milder unMarxist term, socio-economic) location, religious orientations and ethnicity. In particular, I am interested in studying the Malays and their participation in the education system in Malaysia. My other interests at this point of my life includes the role of the markets in shaping educational choices, saying hi to cats and biawaks in the campus, watching the milky tea sandy river of the IIUM, and sometimes just zoning out. I welcome enquiries related to my research interests listed below, with an unwavering obsession towards Bourdieuian theoretical and methodological takes, both quantitative and qualitative:
- Higher Education Aspirations, Choice and Access
- The Production of Educational Inequalities through and by State Policies and Mechanisms
- Cultural Capital (most overused term)
- Social Capital, Networks, and Mobility in Educational Institutions
- School Choices and Parental Strategies
Area of Specialisation
- Social Science ~ Social Science ~ Education ~ Sociology of Education (Including Youth Work, Identity, Gender, Social Class, Changing Contexts and Forms of Education)
- Social Science ~ Social Science ~ Sociology ~ Social Stratification - Education and Social Class, B40, M40, Cultural Capital, Social Capital
