Expert Profile


Dr. Mohamed Aslam Akbar is an Associate Professor of Shari’ah sciences at the Department of Economics, International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM), with several years of experience in academic teaching, research, and institutional service. His areas of specialization intersect across Fiqh al-Muʿāmalāt, Islamic economics and finance, Qurʾanic wisdom studies, and manuscript paleography. He holds a PhD in Philosophy (Ethics and Contemporary Issues) from IIUM, with a bilingual thesis that critically edited and translated the rare Arabic manuscript Kitāb al-Mawāhib al-ʿAliyyah fī al-Jamʿi Bayn al-ikam al-Qurʾāniyyah wa al-adīthiyyah by al-Muttaqī al-Hindī. As an interdisciplinary scholar, Dr. Aslam's teaching spans Fiqh for Economists, Islamic Economic Thought, Zakat Economics, Sustainable Development, and Economics in Qur’an and Sunnah. He has supervised numerous postgraduate students and conducted workshops on academic ethics, thesis formatting, and research writing. He is also a Deputy Internal Auditor (MyRA) and Research Fellow at the Center for Islamic Economics, IIUM. Dr. Aslam is a principal and co-investigator on several FRGS- and IIIT-funded research grants. His current work focuses on waqf-driven food security models, zakat-fintech integration, and Maqāṣid al-Sharīʿah-based frameworks for responsible consumption and governance. His publications appear in Scopus- and WoS-indexed journals, including Journal of Islamic Accounting and Business Research, Al-Shajarah, and International Journal of Islamic and Middle Eastern Finance and Management. Dr. Aslam serves as a peer reviewer for leading Islamic economics journals and is an associate editor for the Elgar Encyclopedia of Islamic Banking and Finance (2023–2024). He is also actively engaged in public scholarship, conference organization, and interdisciplinary Islamic economics curriculum reform. His professional affiliations include the Malaysian Economic Association, Maqasid Institute, Ulama Association of Malaysia (PUM), and the Association of Shari’ah Advisory Council (ASAS).
