Expert Profile
Dr. Mohamed Aslam Akbar is an Associate Professor of Sharīʿah-Based Governance and Economics at the Department of Economics, Kulliyyah of Economics and Management Sciences, International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM). Currently he is the Deputy Dean for Postgraduate, Research and Innovation at the faculty, the Deputy Internal Auditor for MyRA and a Research Fellow for the Centre for Islamic Economics. His scholarly work lies at the intersection of Sharīʿah, economics, and governance, with a particular emphasis on Maqāṣid-driven approaches to public policy, Islamic social finance, and institutional design. He holds a PhD in Philosophy (Ethics and Contemporary Issues) from IIUM, where his doctoral research produced a bilingual critical edition of the classical Arabic manuscript Kitāb al-Mawāhib al-ʿAliyyah fī al-Jamʿi Bayn al-Ḥikam al-Qurʾāniyyah wa al-Ḥadīthiyyah by al-Muttaqī al-Hindī. This training underpins his normative and ethical approach to contemporary economic and governance challenges. Dr. Aslam’s research focuses on Maqāṣid-based economic governance, zakat-fintech integration, waqf-driven development models, and responsible consumption frameworks. He has served as principal investigator and co-investigator for multiple FRGS and IIIT-funded projects and has published widely in Scopus and WoS-indexed journals. In addition to teaching courses such as Fiqh for Economists, Islamic Economic Thought, Zakat Economics, Shari’ah-Oriented Public Policies and Economics in the Qurʾān and Sunnah, he actively supervises postgraduate research and contributes to curriculum development. He serves as an associate editor and peer reviewer for leading journals and is professionally affiliated with the Malaysian Economic Association, ASAS, PUM, and related scholarly bodies.
