Expert Profile
Professor Elfatih A. Abdel Salam started his career as a teacher of English in a Sudanese high secondary school in 1974. In 1976, he was appointed as an assistant lecturer in the Institute of African and Asian Studies, Khartoum University. In 1979, he was sent to the USA to pursue a PhD degree in Political Science. He earned that degree in International Relations and returned home in 1984. Between 1984 and 1994, besides lecturing at Khartoum University, he served on a part time basis in a number of academic and teaching institutions in Sudan, including Omdurman Islamic University, Africa International University, the Military Academy, the Staff College, the Police Academy, the Centre of Training Diplomats (Ministry of Foreign Affairs) and the Sudan Academy of Administrative Sciences. Professor Abdel Salam served as a member of the foreign minister’s Advisory Council (1989/1991) to advise the Minister on matters pertaining to the country’s foreign policy. He also served as a member of another committee that supervised the process of choosing new recruits for the Sudanese diplomatic service and the training of its staff.
In June 1994, he has joined the Department of Political Science, IIUM. At IIUM, he has been teaching different courses in the areas of International Relations, Comparative Politics, and Political Theory at the B.A., M.A. and Ph.D. levels. He has also served as a supervisor and co-supervisor for a larger number of M.A. and Ph.D. dissertations. He served as an external examiner for doctoral dissertations from UM, UKM, UPM and USIM and foreign universities as well. He chaired a number of doctoral committees at IIUM from different Kulliyyahs. He sat at a number of committees at the Department, Kulliyyah and University levels, including IIUM senate.
Professor Abdel Salam has extensively contributed through his writings on different aspects of Political Science, publishing over 40 research articles and five books. He served as a member of editorial boards of a number of journals inside and outside Malaysia. He is a member of a number of professional organizations including Majlis Professor Negara, Malaysia, the USA Political Science Association of the Mid-West, Association of Arab Political Scientists, and the British Middle East Association.
