Expert Profile


Dr. Waqar Asrar graduated from the Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur, and Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, USA. He began his career in 1985 serving the Department of Mechanical Engineering, Yarmouk University and later at Jordan University of Science and Technology, Irbid. During the period of 1991-1996, he was attached to the Department of Mechanical Engineering, Aligarh Muslim University, India. From 1996 until 2002, he worked in the Department of Aerospace Engineering, University Putra Malaysia. Since 2003, he is serving the Department of Mechanical Engineering, IIUM.
Dr Waqar has taught undergraduate and postgraduate subjects in the areas of fluid dynamics, computational fluid dynamics, experimental fluid dynamics, gas dynamics, perturbation methods, non-linear dynamics, vehicle aerodynamics and several other subjects in mechanics.
He has supervised six Ph.D and twelve M.Sc. students. He has been the principal investigator or co-investigator of research grants of over a million Ringgit Malaysia. He has been a consultant to many industrial projects carried out at the IIUM Low Speed Wind Tunnel laboratory.
He has served as Head of Department at UPM and IIUM for nearly twelve years and greatly contributed to the development of the aerospace engineering programme at UPM and IIUM. He has been the person- in-charge of overseeing the establishment of the IIUM Low Speed Wind Tunnel (the largest wind tunnel in Malaysia). He is currently the advisor to the IIUM LSWT lab.
Dr. Waqar has been a member of the editorial board of JST, UPM , has served as an executive editor, IIUM Engineering Journal, and is currently a member of the editorial board IIUM Engineering Journal. He has served as a reviewer of numerous technical papers in journals published by Elsevier, John Wiley, American Chemical Society and Inderscience, IEEE, ASME, ASCE, AICHE, IMechE, and others.
He has been an external examiner of Ph.D theses at IIT Delhi, Universite de Toulouse, France, AMU, India USM, UPM and UTM in Malaysia.
Dr Waqar has received Excellence in Teaching Awards from UPM, Gold Medal for research/invention at the Kulliyyah level, IIUM, and has been nominated as IIUM Distinguished Lecturer in 2007 as well as a silver medal at the Malaysian Technology Exposition 2011. He has also received Quality Service and Excellent Service awards from UPM in 1998 and 1999. Dr Waqar has been a member of AIAA and SAE is currently a member of IMechE(UK) and a Chartered Engineer.
He has published more than 158 articles in refereed international journals and conferences, and is a co-author of one Malaysian patent and two books.
